What do we do?
Virus Identification Section

The Centre provides routine cell culture for virus isolation. Direct immunofluorescence is used for rapid detection of respiratory viruses and to detect pneumocystis jirovecii (PCP). EIA is used for adenovirus and rotavirus antigen detection in stool samples.

Serology Section

The virus serology section detects antibodies to a wide range of viruses and viral antigens in serum using manual and automated assays. Automated analysers include Abbott ARCHITECT and bioMérieux VIDAS.

Apart from routine serology for our own Trust/PCT we provide complement fixation tests for Adenovirus, Influenza A and B, Parainfluenza, Chlamydia, Coxiella burnetii phase 1 and 2, Coxiella burnetii IgM and IgG, RSV, Enterovirus, Leptospira and Brucella. We offer this service to other UK laboratories. In addition to this we also offer reference facility for Mycoplasma.

The virus serology section also carries out testing for bacterial antibodies (ASO, Legionella, Mycoplasma, Treponema, Toxoplasma) and Legionella, antigen.

Aspergillus and Avian (Budgie, Fowl, Pigeon) precipitin testing is also performed by the serology section.

Molecular Section

Molecular diagnostics use real-time PCR for the detection of viral nucleic acid in clinical samples. Routine nucleic acid testing performed in this section include detection and quantification of HIV-1 RNA, HCV RNA and detection of viruses from respiratory specimens (Influenza virus A, Influenza virus B, Avian Influenza virus A H5N1 and Human Metapneumovirus). In addition to these we also provide molecular testing for HSV-1, HSV-2 and Norovirus.

Test for the detection of RSV, Rhinovirus, Parainfluenza viruses 1,2,3 and 4, Adenovirus and Enterovirus is currently under development.
We perform testing for Chlamydia trachomatis (diagnostic and for the National Chlamydia Screening programme) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae using the Genprobe TIGRIS automated system.

Out of hours’ service
We provide advice on all aspects of clinical virology 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

The routine laboratory investigations are provided from:
0900 - 1700 Monday - Friday
0900 - 12.00 on Saturday

Outside of these hours we offer serological testing of transplant patients, acute dialysis patients, VZV contacts and significant needlestick injuries as well as Legionella antigen, direct immunofluorescence for respiratory virus and PCP in clinically important situations.
