SCIQAS 101 (1 stage)

Preamble

SCIQAS is an online training and continuing education tool intended for use by medical virologists and clinical scientists working in virology. Each SCIQAS scenario is a real-life clinical case submitted by one of the CVN’s specialist virology centres or units. Six distributions per year will be provided, each containing two scenarios.

Staff of CVN member laboratories are already eligible to take part in SCIQAS. If you are employed in one of these laboratories (see http://www.clinical-virology.org/pages/cvn/vir_spec/cvn_vr.html) and do not yet have a username and password for the Member’s Area, please contact the Scientific Co-ordinator (
Joy.Kean@ggc.scot.nhs.uk).

Alternatively, if you are not employed in a CVN member laboratory but would still like to participate in SCIQAS, you have the option of becoming a CVN Personal Member. Details can be found here.

Guide to SCIQAS

To use SCIQAS, first navigate to the Member’s Area login page. After logging in, select ‘SCIQAS’ from the four options provided. You will be presented with a screen similar to this:

Select the scenario you wish to complete. You will then be taken to that scenario’s page, which will look something like:

Screenshot 2. Typical example of information provided in a SCIQAS scenario.

Type in your clinical interpretation of these data in the fields provided below the clinical information:

Feel free to mention that in the given circumstances you’d wish additional samples to be provided and/or further assays carried out. Also, if you have any other comments you’d like to make (that are not covered by the first two input fields), please type them in the field labelled ‘Further comments’. When you are finished, just click ‘Submit’!

You have now completed a SCIQAS scenario! To confirm this, an email has been sent to you. It will look like the one below:

This email can be used as evidence that you have completed the scenario for the Royal College of Pathologists’ CME scheme. Each completed scenario is worth two points.

A demonstration SCIQAS scenario can be tried here (awaiting link).
