INSTITUTE OF CELL AND MOLECULAR SCIENCE
Centre for Infectious Disease
CLINICAL SENIOR LECTURER IN VIROLOGY
(REF: 06063/HR)
Applications are invited from experienced clinicians for the post of Clinical Senior Lecturer in Virology. The appointee will join the Centre for Infectious Disease (CID) within the Institute of Cell and Molecular Science (ICMS) at Barts and the London, Queen Marys School of Medicine & Dentistry. The appointee will be primarily based in the Schools innovative new research building on the Whitechapel campus and will hold an honorary consultant contract with Barts and The London NHS Trust.
The successful applicant will be expected to develop an independent research programme, which is complementary to the overall strategy of the Centre for Infectious Disease, the ICMS and the BLT Clinical Support Services Directorate. The recent appointment of a Non-Clinical Chair and a Clinical Senior Lecturer in HIV medicine, and two appointments in Mucosal Immunobiology, have strengthened research into HIV and sexually transmitted infections. In addition groups within the CID are working on skin viruses in particular varicella zoster virus, and human papillomaviruses. Within ICMS other groups are also working on viruses and cancer including HPV, HBV and HCV and vaccine development. Close links with the nearby diagnostic department and the molecular pathology laboratory, will also enhance translational research. The appointee will also be expected to play a significant role in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching particularly with respect to the internationally recognised MSc in Medical Microbiology.
As a clinical academic appointment, applicants will be required to have MRCPath (or equivalent) and a CCST (or be within six months of attainment of CCST) in Medical Microbiology (Virology) or Medical Microbiology (Virology) with Infectious disease. The successful candidate will have clinical sessions within the Department of Virology and may, if appropriate and suitably qualified, also undertake outpatient clinics within the Department of HIV Medicine. The local area has some of the highest prevalence of infectious diseases in the country and the diversity of the population makes this an exciting and stimulating area in which to manage and investigate HIV infection and related diseases.
Whilst seeking to appoint at Clinical Senior Lecturer level, the appointment may be to a more senior level (Readership or Chair) for a candidate of appropriate calibre, and subject to their satisfying the academic criteria for award of academic title within the University of London.
This full time, indefinite appointment will be made on the salary scale for staff holding new Honorary Consultant Contracts, with salary in the range of £69,298 - £93,768 per annum depending on experience and seniority/threshold, plus London Allowance of £2,161 per annum.
Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Judy Breuer, Centre for Infectious Disease Institute of Cell and Molecular Science, and lead clinician for Virology, Tel: 020 7882 2308 or email: j.breuer@qmul.ac.uk and Dr Ines Ushiro Lumb, Consultant clinical virologist or email: ines.ushiro-lumb@bartsandthelondon.nhs.uk.
